Old Town and Plaistow
The parish council's history of Lingfield describes Old Town, around the church, with houses from about 1500 to 1800, and Plaistow Street on the road from the west. In the early fifteenth century Reginald de Cobham founded a college and rebuilt the church of St Peter and St Paul much as it stands today. St Peter's Cross has stood for some 500 years, and the Cage beside it was built in 1773 as a lock-up and last used in 1882.
When the railway and the racecourse arrived in the 1880s, new building joined Old Town and Plaistow into the village we know now. Many fine Wealden houses survive, often disguised behind later fronts.

Choosing windows in Lingfield
Around the church and the pond, some buildings still have leaded casements and timber frames, and thick modern sections look out of place there. Repair or a carefully matched timber window is often the answer. For railway-era villas, sashes or flush casements that follow the original pattern work well, and later houses can choose freely between aluminium and uPVC.
The conservation area covers the High Street, Gun Pond and Church Town. Check the boundary and listed status for the exact address before ordering.
